Colonial Homestay – A House with History This property originally belonged to Sergeant Manuel Duarte. By the early decades of the 18th century, it had already been rebuilt into a two-level residence. In 1770, Don Antonio de Aramburo y Veytía—a city councilman and provincial mayor of Havana—established a charitable foundation (Obra Pía) here, which led the house to be known for many years as “La Casa de la Obra Pía de Aramburo.” Later, it was transferred to the Third Order of Saint Francis, and over time, the property was rented by various commercial enterprises based in Havana. The original colonial structure was eventually demolished, and in 1940, the current building was erected—a solid eclectic-style construction that blends elements of both domestic and civic architecture. The upper floors were designed as private residences, while the ground floor served multiple functions: from warehouses and shops to a graphic printing house that operated here in the 1990s. Today, this space welcomes travelers from around the world—inviting them to rest where Havana’s layered history still lives on.
